Interview with Oren Inditzky GM of Online Stores at WIX on the future of Commerce Platforms

Wix.com is one of the top Website builders which is also making inroads into the ecommerce space with their Online Stores productsd. Startin in 2006 Wix provides a cloud-based web development platform allowing users to create  websites and mobile sites through an intuitive drag-and-drop interface. The platform supports various functionalities, including e-commerce, online marketing, contact forms, and community forums.

Wix operates on a freemium business model, offering free website creation tools with optional premium upgrades for additional features like custom domain names, increased storage, and e-commerce capabilities. As of June 2024, Wix reported having over 260 million users worldwide.

The company has expanded its offerings over the years, including the launch of Wix Studio, a platform tailored for agencies and freelancers, and the introduction of AI-powered tools like the Business Launcher to assist users in creating and managing their online presence.

Oren Inditzky serves as the Vice President of Online Stores at Wix. In this role, he oversees product management, engineering, user experience (UX), design, and operations for Wix's e-commerce solutions.

With a background in business and product leadership, Oren has been instrumental in advancing Wix's e-commerce capabilities, focusing on integrating artificial intelligence to enhance user experience and drive sustained growth. He has shared insights on leveraging AI in e-commerce through various platforms, including podcasts and industry events.

The commerce platform space has seen multiple major players rise up including Wix.  The competivie space include the market leader Shopify as well as others including Squarespace, Weebly (owned by Square), BigCommerce, WooCommerce and also GoDarry another wsbsite builder expanding into commerce.  Wix's model also overlaps with the no-code builder space including companies like Webflow as well as startups including Durable and Framer.

In the GenAI age, the best commerce platforms won’t be the ones that offer the most features—they’ll be the ones that know what you need before you do.

On the AI capability side Wix is offering a "conversational website builder" tool to help customers create their websites conversationally instead of the old developer models of figuring things out from menus and help portals.  This conversational model is a key part of becoming truly AI-powered for commerce platforms.

In this conversation we discuss the impact of AI, specifically Generative AI and advanced machine learning algorithms, on various aspects of e-commerce, such as website creation, business management, and customer-facing tools, along with their potential to enhance the shopping experience and streamline operations.

The concept of MCP (Model Context Protocol) is also introduced as a key enabler for AI agents to interact and transact directly with e-commerce platforms in real-time.
