Unknown Speaker 0:01 Welcome to the retail tech podcast. My name is darious was Safi. And today I am speaking with Mike Potter CEO of rewind, which is a data backup company. How are you today, Mike? Thank you for joining. So, yeah, if you can give me a brief intro on what is rewind? And what kind of services do you provide?
Unknown Speaker 1:51 Okay, so just to give an overview, typically, the way that you know, let's say, if you're with Digital Ocean or, you know, other, you know, hosting providers, or even cloud Well, we can get into that more. But let's say you've got a hosting server, for example, the the backup that they do is the entire server, if something goes wrong, you have to like recover the entire server and set it up from scratch. But in your case, you're actually storing or I guess, backing up granularly so you can recover pieces of data. And so can you explain more as far as like, how, like, is a database separate from the UI? Or is that how you organize it? or?
Unknown Speaker 3:37 Yeah, yeah, just use it as a reference point to compare. Because when people think about backups, what you are providing is really a new form of backup. Most people are not even aware of this type of backup, like, you know, they think that Shopify is protecting all your data, or big commerce. So so let's let's go a little bit into that. Let's say I have a Shopify store. What's the difference between what Shopify provides, as far as I mean Shopify, does Shopify even provide a backup like a pure I mean, quote unquote, backup or
Unknown Speaker 5:29 Right,
Unknown Speaker 5:44 okay, so so would these be instances where something actually happens on my end, for example, I delete something by mistake or. Okay, so this is not something that's done on the Shopify or the provider side. It's just my own team or myself doing something that we shouldn't have done or delete something by mistake or.
Unknown Speaker 8:12 Okay, those are really good, good cases. And now I know where the word catastrophe comes from.
Unknown Speaker 8:18 The So, so So let's talk about how somebody would actually implement rewind on that, for example, you know, their Shopify store.
Unknown Speaker 9:38 Okay, so so that's basically it, you just create an account on rewind, and you just start the process from there. And if I ever have you ever had any problems? Where do I actually do the recovery in Shopify or on rewind
Unknown Speaker 10:24 Okay, okay, so how do you do? Do you have like a timestamp of where I can go back to recover? I'm just talking from my old experience with backups.
Unknown Speaker 12:37 Okay, yeah, this is very interesting. I mean, this is really what everybody needs to have. I can speak for my experience is that this is just, you know, it's like insurance, right? You use things can happen. And in an online store, if something happens and you can't recover things, you that's just money down to, you know, is gone, lost, lost revenues lost customer issues, I mean, more customers issue so I think Yeah. Right. So so just to reset the room, I am speaking with Mike Potter CEO of a company called rewind, this room is actually being recorded of the speakers. I need to say that and in about a few minutes, I'm going to open it you know, if you want to join and ask Mike any questions, we can take audience questions, otherwise we'll continue. So, Mike, is there any kind of data that you do not backup
Unknown Speaker 14:52 and Okay, now I see the pricing is dependent on, like if the metered pricing correct.
Unknown Speaker 16:06 Are you finding that companies at certain stages of growth are more inclined to use the service than like really small company like retailers or website owners?
Unknown Speaker 17:21 That's great. When So you said the company started five years ago? Okay, great. Yeah. Okay, so this service started with Shopify only correct. Is that correct?
Unknown Speaker 19:28 That's awesome. Were you solving your own problem when you first came up with this idea? I mean, did you have like a Shopify store and you had this problem or how did you come up with this idea?
Unknown Speaker 20:47 Yeah, yeah, I mean the reason I ask is that it this is like a really, I think a game changer. And just because you don't hear a lot of software innovation in backups, you hear a lot of like hardware or at least you did you know, and now with iCloud doing backups, but this is like really innovative. So I was wondering how the idea came about now. Your global correct.
Unknown Speaker 21:45 So, I read in the intro that we had is that Wednesday is the world backup day. Is that correct? That's very interesting. I have not heard of that. The the word lack of it's good to get the awareness out. We all remember backups when it's too late, unfortunately. So.
Unknown Speaker 23:11 Yeah. Right. Yeah. So looking ahead. How do you see? Well, I mean, there you play in so many different areas, like even like a QuickBooks backups. So I don't know what kind of a question I don't want to ask too general of a question. But as far as backups are concerned, what is what do you see being the next level of innovation in backups?
Unknown Speaker 25:31 And as far as like linking multiple accounts on the same rewind, I guess account, so then would you pay separately for the the Shopify backup, and then for the GitHub and then for the QuickBooks for example.
Unknown Speaker 26:09 Okay. And it's a month to month basis, so there is no big commitment.
Unknown Speaker 26:43 Okay, so what are you finding? As far as like the biggest challenges in growing the business? I mean, this must This is a very fast growing, you know, businesses I can I mean, definitely hear from what you're telling me. What's the biggest challenge?
Unknown Speaker 28:42 What about your team? How fast is the team growing? Wow, that must keep you busy. Yeah, yeah. I mean, I can, I can definitely tell from my own, you know, point of view that on the customer side really what you meant about, you know, what you said about education and awareness is key. Because, you know, I've been in the business for a long time. And, you know, have worked with Shopify, for example, QuickBooks for a long time. And I have no idea this was available until last year, I heard about the company. But then like, more recently, this is, this is definitely it. This can, you know, completes your backup process. I mean, you definitely you can count on the platform's to do their backups. But this completes it. Otherwise, you're like, you know, not, you're partially protected. So I can definitely see that. Yeah. Yes, yep. It takes, I guess, you know, repeating it, and hopefully, we, you know, as we publish this and in talk to more people, I mean, for me is, you know, I, this is my business, retail, tech and e commerce. And when I hear about something that I really think is useful, I start spreading the word. So I think this is, this is a great service to actually tell people about, so I'll definitely be doing it on my end.
Unknown Speaker 31:52 All right, Mike. Well, I think we're on up on time. Thank you so much again. And, you know, best wishes for the company's growth and hope to hear next year you're at 200 people. Have a great day.
