In this interview I spoke with Jason Miller Chief Strategist of Commerce at Akamai Technologies about how Akamai helps retailers deliver content faster, and protect their properties from malicious attacks.
Akamai is not a newcomer to the Internet and Web world and their experience provides them with a deep understanding on how things work on the web specially in content delivery. And it's good to see they are expanding the list of services not only in staying current with content delivery in the new image and video-focused, mobile world but also adding compleimentary services such as security and bot management.
Some of the new products Jason mentioned were:
- An update to ION, the Adaptive Content Delivery product including Pre Fetching, pushing content to users and a mobile SDK.
- The Image Manager, a service for companies to offload the management of image and visual content to Akamai. image Manager automatically detects the device and browser or app the user is using and dynamically sizes and format images for best performance on the specific format the user is consuming the content.
- And the Bot Manager. 40-50% of all web traffic is from bots, specially on retailer website from apparel to airline websites. Not all bot traffic is bad though so you don't want to block all of it but sometimes, for example in the case of airlines the repeated queries from bots cost the airlines a lot since they have to pay their data partners by the call. So the Bot manager intelligently handles different bots based on the websties business logic and not just technical.
Akamai is continuing the goal of always being no more that "One Hop" away from the user and they also have a video division which focused on delivering Video content at scale.
